Barcelona maestro Lionel Messi and coach Quique Setien hold talks to settle their differences.
Reports suggest that the two men met over the weekend and held an hour-long discussion, evaluating what has happened so far throughout the season, along with what needs to be done to play their desired football in Portugal next month.
After losing the La Liga crown to Real Madrid, Barca only have the Champions League available to achieve or else risk going the entire season trophyless after also losing Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey.
The 2-1 loss against Osasuna triggered the Barca captain to give a rare post-match interview criticizing the entire season and the squad’s performance.
“We didn’t expect to finish in this way, but it sums up the year for us, We are a weak team who can be beaten with enough intensity and enthusiasm. We have lost a lot of points which we shouldn’t have done [and have] been very inconsistent. We need to be self-critical, starting with the players but also across the entire club.” The Argentine said.
The following match against Alaves, however, displayed a unique Barcelona squad where Setien’s men dominated their opposition. It was a rare occurrence where the squad could successfully perform their tactics in an away clash, after being known to have a poor away form.
While the performance gives hope for the upcoming Champions League, the reality is that the team needs to improve many aspects of their game in order to win against potential opposition like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and many more.
Mundo Deportivo reports that the two held a meeting on Saturday when Setien requested Messi to sit and discuss their individual point of view. Regardless of their differences, both the men desire the same thing for the club and must unite in order to give the fans a title that has escaped Blaugrana in recent years.
Fans now await the second-leg clash against Napoli to see which version of Barca is going to compete for the European Glory in Portgual.
