Barcelona prioritize to calm the waters over Lionel Messi’s possible exit next summer as the club are optimistic on a possible renewal

The 2019/20 campaign was filled with adversities and discontent for the Catalan club, FC Barcelona after handing over the league title to Real Madrid and being humiliated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League. The La Liga giants were quick to dismiss Quique Setien in what followed to be a disastrous campaign for the former Betico man and appointed the Dutch manager Ronald Koeman to calm the waters.

However, the misery had not ended there as  Lionel Messi publicly addressed his desire to leave the club after wasting several crucial years of his peak due to the errors that were made by the board and management. Nonetheless, Messi is set to continue for a season at the Camp Nou despite playing against his will as the club were insistent that he will not be sold this summer.

The question is whether Messi will continue at the Camp Nou next season when his current contract runs out in the summer. The issue with the 33-year-old is with the board and with the presidential election next year, there could be a possible turn of events.

According to the reports, La Liga giants are preparing a 2-year contract extension for the Argentine forward which will see him extend his stay at Camp Nou till 2023. One club man, Lionel Messi looks forward to ending his footballing career at Barcelona, unless he decides to move back to his boyhood club, Newell’s Old Boys.

There is a slight possibility of the 33-year-old leaving the Blaugrana by the end of the season as his current deal will run out by the summer of 2021, making him seek new challenges ahead. Former Premier League champions, Manchester City came very close to sign the 5-time golden ball winner earlier this month but the deal fell through as Messi pledged his loyalty to the Catalan giants once again.
