Lionel Messi might leave Barcelona after the humiliating exit from the Champions League.
After an embarrassing defeat against Bayern Munich, Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has found the ideal destination amidst Camp Nou exit talk. The massive defeat calls for a major overhaul for the Catalan giants who will look to sell multiple players in order to raise a significant amount of funds that could potentially be used for the many transfer targets.
Despite the loss, Barca have many superstars who haven’t performed poorly and while the list remains undisclosed, the general belief is that Lionel Messi, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Clement Lenglet, and Frenkie de Jong remain the untouchables.
Everyone else in the squad could potentially be looked to be sold or traded, especially the many aging stars like Arturo Vidal, Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique, and Luis Suarez. Meanwhile, underperforming or struggling players like Nelson Semedo, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho, Junior Firpo and more, could also be on their way out of the Nou Camp.
Unfortunately for the Spanish side, their problems stretch beyond the players and their coaching staff. And while they need to re-evaluate their entire football project, the club risks losing their biggest asset, Lionel Messi. The Argentine maestro has a contract until June 2021 but could potentially start negotiating with other clubs from January. Messi has voiced his concerns and if the board fails to convince him with a solid plan that he approves, he will likely leave the club next season.
While the possible destinations are plenty as who wouldn’t want to acquire the six-time Ballon D’or Winner, Manchester City believes they really have a golden chance to secure the G.O.A.T. According to Mirror, the Premier League side are prepared to pay any amount of salary to Messi, to convince him to reunite with Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.
The Barca captain has a release clause of 635 million pounds, which is simply not affordable by any club leaving the only possibility being his own approval. Barca are planning for a rebuild but it remains to be seen if the 33-year-old wishes to be a part of it under the current president, Josep Maria Bartomeu.
