Lionel Messi was reportedly contemplating a possible move to Atletico Madrid to reunite with Luis Suarez once again.
Paris Saint-Germain have officially announced the much-awaited signing of Lionel Messi. The 34-year-old has penned a deal until 2023 with PSG after arriving as a free agent after his contract renewal negotiations with Barcelona were called off. According to Daily Mail, Atletico Madrid had made a last-minute bid to Leo Messi before he had accepted terms with the French team.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner was seriously contemplating a move to the Spanish capital and was keen on reuniting with his former teammate, Luis Suarez. Suarez joined Atletico as a free agent in the summer of 2020 from Barca and played a pivotal role in guiding Los Rojiblancos to the La Liga title last season, scoring 21 goals in the league.
The former Liverpool striker wanted to reunite with Messi and was spotted at the 34-year-old’s house in Barcelona a day before he left for Paris. Diego Simeone had personally spoken to Leo Messi as well and wanted him on his squad to defend the Spanish league title.
Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi shared telepathic chemistry during their time at Camp Nou which saw the duo scored a combined total of 478 goals together while lifting 13 trophies in five years since Suarez signed for the Catalans in 2014. While Suarez and Simeone were keen on having Messi on board, the deal seemed to be unfeasible and impractical due to the Argentine’s wages.
Atletico have been on the lookout for a supporting striker to accompany Suarez in the frontline. The Madrid-based side was linked with Antoine Griezmann but Messi was the option that Simeone wanted after Barcelona officially communicated his departure. The Argentine’s presence would have been beneficial to both Atletico Madrid and La Liga due to his prominence and stature from a footballing and marketing points of views.
Nonetheless, the 34-year-old has now reunited with Neymar at PSG and will form one of football’s most exciting attacking trios with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar. Nasser Al-Khelaifi has put together a winning project that seems destined for greatness after signing Achraf Hakimi, Gianluigi Donnaruma, Georginio Wijnaldum, Sergio Ramos and Lionel Messi- all in one transfer window.
Mauricio Pochettino has been given a golden opportunity at winning the UEFA Champions League next season with such a strong squad at his disposal. The pressure will be at its highest for Les Parisiens to deliver in Europe’s grandest competition after the arrival of one of the world’s greatest players.
Can PSG go all the way next season after such a successful transfer window?
