Lionel Messi has rejected the option of continuing at FC Barcelona beyond 2021.
Barcelona are on the verge of destruction as Lionel Messi has dropped another bomb regarding his future. The Argentine international does not wish to continue beyond the 2021 season blaming the current frustrating situation at Camp Nou.
Prior to the restart of La Liga, Barca no. 10 was thrilled about returning to playing football after three months of lockdown. Unfortunately for the Catalans, things were not so smooth as many different factors led to their declining performance.
Recent draws against Sevilla, Celta Vigo, and Atletico Madrid have helped Real Madrid push 4 points ahead of the Catalans as a visible quarrel between the players and the management is being reported as the reason for their latest struggles.
The situation at Camp Nou is worsening drastically as weeks pass by, as the problem is not only limited to the performances of the players but also the coaching staff and board.
Quique Setien has come under a lot of criticism for his inability to beat the opposition’s defensive line while playing a predictable style of football. He is also questioned on many occasions for his failure to use the 5 allotted substitutions during a course of a match that would allow his many 30+ aged athletes to take the necessary rests in-between constant fixtures.
Meanwhile, the club’s president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, and sporting director, Eric Abidal, have been criticized for their philosophy of prioritizing finances over the squad’s performance. Their latest transfer of Arthur Melo for a 30-year-old Miralem Pjanic speaks for itself when it comes to what the board is currently focused on.
It seems that Messi has had enough with being placed in a disadvantageous situation because of the coach’s and board’s decisions. Diario Gol has reported that the Argentine captain has stated that if Josep Maria Bartomeu gets reelected in 2021, he will part ways from Barcelona.
An existing clause in his current contract allows him to leave at any stage prior to June 10. If he does not activate this option, his contract automatically expires on June 30th, 2021.
Leo has used his influence at Camp Nou for the betterment of Barca as he has voiced his concerns over the way Bartomeu has run the club. The only way he will remain beyond the 2021 mark is if Bartomeu and co. leave at the end of this term and a new project is announced under the potential president, Joan Laporta, including the return of former players like Xavi Hernandez, Carles Puyol, and Pep Guardiola.
