Laporta shortlists five potential signings in his mission to rebuild Barcelona

Barcelona need to make major changes to their squad and there certainly seems to be a plan set out by the potential president, Joan Laporta.

January could turn out to be a massive turning point in the future of Barcelona as the club’s elections are scheduled to take place. Joan Laporta and Victor Font are the two frontrunning candidates to occupy the president’s role, whilst facing a massive task on their hands to rescue a sinking ship after the tumultuous presidency of Josep Maria Bartomeu.

Laporta oversaw the most glorious era in the Barca history as they won two Champions League titles in three seasons, including a historic treble and hat-trick of La Liga titles. The 58-year-old has also revealed that he has the trust of Lionel Messi, which may be another crucial claim in his bid to outdo his competitors to the presidential crown.

Diario GOL has now claimed that Laporta has shortlisted as many as five signings as the Blaugrana require a major overhaul. In the event that they are unable to retain Messi post his current contract, the La Liga outfit is staring at a major saving in terms of wages which it can afford to spend on newer signings. Not to mention, they could be in a better situation by the end of the ongoing campaign to make summer signings possible.

Barcelona have a leaky backline and a revamp in defence will be prioritized upon. Laporta will turn to two of the finest free agents available at the moment in David Alaba and Eric Garcia. Bayern Munich have cleared Alaba to leave at the end of the campaign and Manchester City also risk losing their central defender for free in six months.

Alaba has been made a priority by Los Blancos, who are willing to match his wage demands and sign him on a pre-contract in January. However, in a bid to keep his place in the Bayern squad, the Austrian may stall on a concrete agreement till the end of this season which surely gives Barca a shot at landing him to the Camp Nou as well.

Eric Garcia on the flipside was wanted by the Catalans since this summer and they will inevitably reignite their interest in him in the winter. With the emergence of John Stones in the heart of defence, the Citizens may opt in favour of parting company with the 19-year-old. In the upcoming transfer window, Manchester City could receive a fee for selling him if at all they are unable to convince him to an extension against the odds.

Considering that Sergio Busquets is well past his best, the presidential candidate also wants a defensive midfielder. He has made Eduardo Camavinga his primary target and will need to rival interest from several European sides including Real Madrid to land him. Camavinga is one of the best youngsters in the world and will be a massive signing.

In addition to Camavinga, Barcelona are expected to have another bite at signing Marco Verratti from Paris Saint-Germain. The midfielder was linked with the club since a few years and could be the exact player they need. Verratti can help play the ball forward with his footwork whereas his defensive work-rate is commendable as well.

Finally, Erling Haaland is the player Joan Laporta wants to land. The Borussia Dortmund marksman is seen as a marquee signing and his availability for a sum of 75 million euros proves to be a bargain in today’s market. Laporta certainly has ambitious plans for Barcelona and it looks like he will get majority of the players he wants. Do you think Barca will live a golden era once again if he is re-elected as president?
