Juventus ace rejects a proposal from Manchester City to join them this summer after reuniting with a former teammate.

Since the arrival of Pep Guardiola, Manchester City has achieved great success, winning the Premier League twice and plenty of other domestic trophies. But, the former Barcelona man has failed to achieve any European success with the side, getting eliminated in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League since the 2016-17 season. This season though, the Sky-Blues have not only lost out on the UCL but lost the league as well, by a large margin to Liverpool.

With the amount of money the Spaniard has spent on the club and having the reputation of being one of the greatest coaches in football, such performances and results are not expected out of him. The main excuse for Manchester City this season has been their defense, with injuries riddling the team, Pep has had trouble with centrebacks with star player Aymeric Laporte injured for most of the season. Spending 300 million euros on the backline was not enough for the 49-year-old as he clearly needs more quality players as central defenders.

One player that Pep has repeatedly tried to bring to the team is Leonardo Bonucci. The Italian superstar, paired up with Giorgio Chiellini has formed one of the best backlines in Europe for the past few years and Guardiola is a very big admirer of the 33-year-old and his abilities. But, City has been unsuccessful with its bid to bring the Italian to the Etihad Stadium. According to reports, the Juventus ace declined the proposal to join the English side.

Bonucci was greatly ‘flattered’ by the proposal, but aims to stay back at the Serie-A side, following the arrival of former teammate Andrea Pirlo as head coach. The former Inter Milan man wants to be alongside Pirlo who will attempt to carry out a major rebuilding of the team. The decision of declination of the proposal was so quickly taken that negotiations didn’t even start between any of the 3 parties.

Although City has already bought Nathan Ake for 40 million euros as a backup, they still have to look for experienced and quality center-backs to further reinforce their squad. With a great attack and midfield its a shame to see such a team lose out on trophies because of their defense. All that will hopefully be subject to change with the start of the 2020/2021 season.
