Juventus have reportedly turned down Tottenham Hotspur’s bid for their centre-back as Andrea Pirlo claims the defender to be a priority

After a relatively successful transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur has encountered a problem with their most recent transfer target. Having made reinforcements in the attacking aspect, Jose Mourinho’s side were looking to purchase a defender to improve the backline as that they had lacked in that department last season. The player that the Lilywhites were hoping to bring in was Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar, but due to discrepancies between the two teams, a consensus for the price of the signing could not be reached.

As a result, the English side was forced to look elsewhere for alternatives to the Slovakian. A promising candidate was eventually found in Merih Demiral who plays for Serie-A giants Juventus. The Turkish international is young, tall, and has a physical presence which are the ideal qualities that Mourinho looks for in his defenders. The 22-year-old has been phenomenal for Juve whenever he has started and has been deemed as the perfect partner for Matthijs de Ligt in the future.

Getting to play just six games for the Bianconeri in the 2019-2020 Serie-A season, the Turkish international was unhappy with the game time he was receiving, and seeing this Spurs made an offer to the Turin side. However, according to reports Juventus have now changed their stance on the youngster and has said that he will not be up for sale. Several other teams have inquired about the defender and have been greeted with the same response.

Consequently, the Lilywhites would have had the task of searching for even more potential candidates who can be a good fit in their backline. Instead, the English side has decided to double down on their initial option Milan Skriniar. Recent news suggests that both sides will now be more open to negotiations and be flexible with their demands this time around.

The 2020-2021 season is set to be an exciting and competitive one, especially in the Premier League, and with ‘The Special One’ being active in the transfer window, it remains to be seen if Spurs will be breaking their long-lasting trophy drought under the Portuguese mastermind.
