3 talking points as FC Porto stun Juventus in the UEFA Champions League

FC Porto managed to secure a narrow 2-1 victory over Juventus in the Round of 16 first leg UEFA Champions League clash at Estadio do Dragao.

Juventus continue to struggle in the UEFA Champions League after being handed another defeat in the first leg of the knockout stages. Despite being clearly favourites over FC Porto, the Turin based side were left clueless after conceding a goal in the first minute of the game followed by the second in the first minute of the second half.

Sergio Conceicao‘s side were by far the better team and deservedly secured a victory on home soil. Despite having less possession, Porto seemed like the most dangerous side every time they progressed and were close to extending their advantage on a few occasions but were let down by poor finishing.

Andrea Pirlo and his coaching staff will have to go back to the drawing board to prepare for the return leg if they are to qualify. It seems like Juve’s drought in the UEFA Champions League is set to continue as the Bianconeri have failed to win Europe’s elite competition since their last victory back in 1996.

JUVENTUS SEEMED FAR TOO CASUAL AND LACKED THE MUCH NEEDED PHYSICALITY

Juventus conceded 63 seconds into the first half of the game after a casual back pass from Rodrigo Bentancur to Wojciech Szczesny saw Mehdi Taremi intercept the ball before slotting it into an open net. Thereafter, the Bianconeri lacked drive and vigour seemed far too clueless with the ball while moving forward, often giving away possession.

It seemed like a strong half-time team talk from Andrea Pirlo would turn the situation around. However, Porto managed to once again find the back of the net 19 seconds into the second half after Wilson Manafa was left unchallenged by the defence to square the ball onto the path of Moussa Marega.

The Bianconeri seemed lively only towards the final few minutes of the game after Federico Chiesa scored a brilliant goal. If Juve are to secure a comeback in the return leg, then the must put on the same show against Porto that was on display for the last ten minutes, however, the same hunger and determination must last for the entire course of 90 minutes.
