Juventus and Milan duo join the race to sign chief Barcelona target

Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan are all on the bandwagon to sign one of the primary Barcelona targets of the 2021 calendar year.

The Serie A is witnessing one of Europe’s most unpredictable title races this season as AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus are all in contention to win the Scudetto. While the Bianconeri are targeting their tenth successive championship, the Milan rivals are hoping to return to the summit of Italy after several years of a silverware drought.

In a bid to do so, all sides have been busy in the recent transfer windows as some of Europe’s best players headed to Italy. Alvaro Morata, Achraf Hakimi and Sandro Tonali are just a handful of players who have joined one of three Italian giants in recent months. The trio is now all set to battle it out for key Barcelona target, Memphis Depay, Mundo Deportivo claims.

Memphis Depay has been linked with an exit from Olympique Lyon for several months amid expiry of his contract at the end of his current season. The Dutchman’s most likely destination has looked Barca primarily due to Ronald Koeman’s presence at the helm, but some other sides including the most recent entrants have vested interest in him as well.

One of the most important assets that Depay possesses is his pace and skill on the ball, but his versatility cannot be understated. The former Manchester United superstar is capable of playing on either flank, as well as an attacking midfielder. Barcelona see him as a cheaper option to Neymar considering that they have struggled to fill his void for nearly four years now.

Juventus on the other hand need some creativity, which evidences their interest in bringing in the 26-year-old on-board. The fact that he is a potential free signing is one of the reasons why the Old Lady of Turin has shown interest in Depay. The defending Serie A champions have been shrewd in their business and brought in some great players for free in recent years, and the case is same for Depay.

AC Milan meanwhile risk losing Hakan Calhanoglu as a free agent at the end of this summer and are looking to replace him with another free agent. The Turkish international has not shown interest in renewing his contract but remains one of Stefano Pioli’s most creative players and hence, it is imperative that the Rossoneri replace him.

Inter Milan’s interest of them all seems a bit grey because there is nowhere that Depay could fit in under Antonio Conte’s 3-5-2 formation. The Nerazzurri already have quality wing-backs and Depay certainly would not want to play in a defensive role, whereas Conte also has quality strikers in the shape of Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez.

Where do you think Memphis Depay will play his football from the 2021/22 campaign?
