Jorge Mendes is offering FC Barcelona a chance to sign a world-class central defender as a replacement to Gerard Pique.

FC Barcelona is going through one of the worst times in its history. In the last three seasons, the Cules have spent around more than 400 million euros on transfers that have hardly given any fruit, perhaps the only good buy that they have made was Arturo Vidal from Bayern Munich, which has helped the team immensely in the defensive aspect.

Currently, the Catalans face a problem with their star player Lionel Messi, who was set to leave the club because of the disappointing board and incompetent president Josep Maria Bartomeu. With his departure next season, it would be perhaps the first time in 20+ years that Barcelona would not have a world-class forward they can depend on in their team. And that is not the end of their problems.

The current squad of the Blaugrana features six players that are above the age of 29, with five of them being in their thirties. They will need a lot more than just a forward to still hold their position as one of the best teams in the world. Most importantly what is needed is a prolific center back.

With Gerard Pique being 33 years old and losing out on his qualities that made him the player he is, the Spanish giants need to sign a replacement for the World Cup winner. The iconic number 3 is the person responsible for holding the defensive backline of the club and has been a key figure in all of their recent successful campaigns, which will make finding a candidate to fill in his shoes all the more difficult.

According to reports, agent Jorge Mendes is offering one of his clients to the club as a suitable replacement for a good deal. Portuguese international Ruben Dias is the player in question. Currently playing for Benfica in Liga NOS, the 23-year-old has been exceptional recently and possesses the gift of height and a good physicality which cement his position as an ideal backup for Pique. The offer on the table is for 60 million euros which in no means is a small amount, but is not an amount that is unaffordable for Barca.

Also with Samuel Umtiti likely to leave and Clement Lenglet not being trusted enough, it makes it all the more important to make such a signing, and being so young the Portuguese has a lot of room to improve. Although nothing has been confirmed as of yet, it would be wise for the Catalans to splurge money on a player of Ruben’s caliber.
