The newly appointed president of Barcelona- Joan Laporta, has reportedly come up with a plan to protect two generational talents in the team.
It’s been a matter of a few weeks since Joan Laporta was appointed as the president of Barcelona. The 58-year-old has been defined as the shining light to help restore the club after it had plummeted under the reign of Josep Maria Bartomeu and Eric Abidal over the past few years.
Apart from restoring Barca’s economic situation, Laporta has been tasked with the duty of rebuilding the team. A formidable side to compete for the UEFA Champions League remains the main objective for the new board which will also convince Lionel Messi into renewing his contract.
Ronald Koeman has already played a huge role in rebuilding the team that seemed to have been taken to the cleaners under Quique Setien. The Dutch manager has incorporated youth into the starting eleven by providing chances to the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Sergino Dest, Pedri, Fransico Trincao, Ronald Araujo to name a few.
Amongst the bunch of talented youngers that Barcelona currently have, only two of them truly stand out in the shape of Ansu Fati and Pedri. The former was wanted by Manchester United last summer and the Red Devils were even willing to pay a record breaking sum worth 150 million euros for the teenager.
Meanwhile, the latter has been showing his class and maturity in La Liga by becoming one of the most important and versatile player in Ronald Koeman’s side. The pair have gathered the world’s attention and securing their future is key for Barcelona.
El Confidencial claims that Laporta is willing to show both Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho the door this summer transfer window in a bid to retain Fati and Pedri. Griezmann and Coutinho are Barca’s most expensive signings, however, neither of the two have lived up to the expectations or the price tag.
With that being said, the superstar duo are also one of the club’s highest earns in wages. Selling them this summer could mean that Barca could offer Ansu Fati and Pedri a better long-term deal with higher wages while also setting aside a huge sum for a potential transfer.
What do you make of Laporta’s plan on selling Coutinho and Griezmann to keep Fati and Pedri for a longer-term?
