Inter Milan could face another setback before the start of the new season as Arsenal show interest in their marksman.
Inter Milan have experienced a topsy-turvy summer so far due to their financial situation. The Nerazzurri first parted ways with Antonio Conte and then bid farewell to Achraf Hakimi who signed for Paris Saint-Germain. Despite Hakimi’s sale, Inter are still struggling to find a sustainable operational model for the upcoming 2021/22 season.
Last season’s Serie A champions are open to offloading more players to meet their monetary objective. One of them could be Lautaro Martinez.
Inter Milan is currently negotiating a deal with Arsenal over Hector Bellerin as a replacement to Hakimi. According to The Atheltic, the north Londoners have shown interest in Martinez as well and are keen on signing him.
The Gunners consider him to be their ideal signing to spearhead their frontline that was sub-par last season as the likes of Alexander Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Willian misfired more often than not that cost them several points.
While Lautaro Martinez would be a phenomenal signing for Arsenal, it would be a catastrophic loss for Inter Milan. The Argentine striker scored 19 goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions for Inter last season and was a key player in guiding them to the Scudetto after 11 long years.
Apart from his own individual performances, Martinez has also formed a lethal strike partnership with Romelu Lukaku over the last two seasons. The 23-year-old’s off the ball movement and ability to drag defenders out from their position has been pivotal for Lukaku’s success who has thrived on his counterpart’s build-up play. It could be a huge challenge for the former Manchester United striker to operate as a lone-striker next season especially because he has played in a system of two strikers for most of his career.
However, if Inter do sanction a sale for Lautaro Martinez, the Nerazzurri are confident in signing a replacement immediately. Simone Inzaghi has shortlisted Real Madrid’s Luka Jovic– a striker that operates at his best in a two striker partnership up front. Like the 23-year-old, Jovic is an excellent player on the ball with his build-up play and could be a like-for-like replacement for Martinez.
