Gerard Pique of Barcelona has been linked with a Premier League side that is eager on signing the Spanish defender.

One of the biggest upsets by a club this season has been with LaLiga giants FC Barcelona. The Catalan club has had a very disappointing season, with a 2nd finish in the league, failure to win any of the Classicos, an exit in the Copa Del Ray carried out by Athletic Bilbao and a humiliating and humbling defeat by Bayern Munich in the knockout stages of the Champions League. After a season like that, the Barca board was quick to get rid of coach Quique Setien and sporting director Eric Abidal for a massive renovation of the club next season.

A new manager has been appointed for the club, former Everton coach Ronald Koeman. The Dutchman would be looking to get rid of quite a lot of ‘dead weight’ or players that have not performed or might not hold a place in his future plans for the club. This may also include players who are aging and are way past their prime. The 8-2 defeat to the Bavarians was eye-opening for the Cules, who now need to invest in a younger and faster defense and a more efficient and deadly attack.

One of the players whose future is uncertain at the club is Gerard Pique. After the Spaniard’s underwhelming display against Bayern, in his post-game interview, he stated that the club is in dire need of changes and he would be the first to leave if required to bring newer and better players into the club and it might be the case for the 2010 World Cup winner.

Pique has always been one of the best players for Barcelona and one of the best center-backs in Europe for many years but it seems like the hierarchy of defenders in the continent is changing, and the 33-year-old is falling down the list due to his deteriorating pace and defensive abilities. And if reports are to be believed, there are many clubs interested in taking the Spanish international off the hands of the Blaugrana.

Reportedly, Premier League side Fulham are interested in purchasing the Barca star in one of the most ambitious transfer targets of the club. The club has recently been promoted to the Premier League and the addition of a hardened veteran like Pique to the squad might help them retain their spot in the first division of English football.  The English side has already extended an offer to the Catalans and it is not one that can be ignored.

Further negotiations are yet to take place between the two clubs and personal terms are yet to be agreed on, but the funds gathered by this move will benefit Barcelona in the upcoming transfer windows and the addition of Pique will help greatly for the shaky defense of Fulham.
