Chelsea ready to secure Getafe youngster as an alternative for Ben Chilwell.

Chelsea are heavily considering former Barcelona youngster, Marc Cucurella, after negotiations for Ben Chilwell with Leicester City fall through.

AS reports that Frank Lampard is ready to bid 30 million euros for the 22-year-old after identifying him as an alternative for the squad’s left-back role. Cucurella was monitored by the Premier League giants since March as a backup to Chilwell.

Initially, Lampard was keen on securing Ben from Leicester but the Foxes’ coach Brendan Rodgers opened up about Chelsea’s interest in the 23-year-old saying,

We will always fight to keep the players here but, if they’re not going to be here, the club will get the best price for the player, it’s as simple as that.” Brendan said.

“We’re aware that while there are good players here, that will be of interest to teams who have more money than ourselves. We’re not naive, but we don’t lose sleep worrying over it.” He continued.

Leicester’s asking price is what pushed the Blues away from their defender with the La Masia graduate now named as the favorite to move to Stanford Bridge. Cucurella has played 45 matches for Getafe since his move from Barcelona.

Barca board were initially keen on developing the player further but the worsening of the economic crisis after the outbreak of COVID-19 had forced the club to make a sale in 2019. They previously held a 40% right on the player but Getafe paid 10 million euros to significantly reduce this percentage.

Both the Spanish sides agreed upon the youngster’s permanent transfer with the Catalans having only a 10% cut of any future transfers, with Chelsea now looking to secure the Spaniard ahead of the 2020-21 campaign. Barca might be regretting their decision as they themselves are in search of a backup left-back for Jordi Alba.
