Chelsea are having a revolutionary transfer window and after making two big signings already, the Blues are once again going to splash their cash.
Chelsea have already been a busy party in the transfer market having closed in on the lucrative yet lucid signings of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. Kai Havertz is expected to follow suit whereas Ben Chilwell, David Alaba and Nicolas Tagliafico are also being linked with a move to the Stamford Bridge as the hunt for a left-back has been made public.
Besides potentially signing as many as four players, the Blues are also keen on landing a central defender. For the time being, they’re lacking quality as compared to Gary Cahill and John Terry who they had not too long ago. Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma are the four options in the backline available right now.
While all the players are certainly very good in quality, they are still not as capable as Frank Lampard would need to compete in the Champions League. Ajax Amsterdam, Bayern Munich and Valencia gave the west Londoners a tough time in the European Cup and the need for a central defender was highlighted ever since.
Fichajes has now reported that after landing Werner from RB Leipzig, the Premier League giants are plotting another major assault on the Bundesliga giants by joining the race for Dayot Upamecano. The centre-back is one of the world’s best in the business and still has a long career ahead of him, therefore being a player in extensive demand.

Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur have all been monitoring his situation and the player is expected to be on the move this summer amid the number of offers at his disposal. His preference would be to play for a Champions League side and so Chelsea’s crosstown rivals are practically not realistic options.
Dayot Upamecano is valued at 65 million euros by the German outfit but the price may have slashed as a result of the recession caused by the coronavirus. The Frenchman is worth every penny even at his estimated price before the financial depression and the 5-time Premier League winners will easily be able to afford him.
Honestly speaking, Chelsea have struggled to cope defensively since their time under Maurizio Sarri and one of the probable reasons for this is the fact that the heart of their defence has malfunctioned. Cahill and Terry added brilliant dominance out there and were one of the major success elements under Antonio Conte, before eventually leaving the club.
Upamecano will be a solid addition to the Pensioners’ roster given all the characteristics he possesses. A tall and muscular central defender, the 21-year-old will not require much time to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League. Winning the aerial duels can help Lampard’s team in playing on the counter and from the back, traditionally like they would.
The Blues are now in the FA Cup semi-final and staring at a Champions League finish thanks to their standing in the Premier League. Most of their targets will be happy to join a developing squad of great quality and if Roman Abramovich can close out five signings soon, he should turn to enhancing the goalkeeper’s role by axing Kepa Arrizabalaga.
