Chelsea are thought to be interested in signing one of Barcelona’s most expensive recruits prior to next season’s kick-off.
Chelsea won the Champions League last season, thanks to a brilliant turnaround by Thomas Tuchel, who took charge of the club in January after Frank Lampard’s sacking. The Blues will offer full support to the German in the transfer window and one of the positions which Tuchel wishes to rebuild is that of a striker.
Timo Werner has not met expectations and crumbled under pressure, while Tammy Abraham has not managed to impress the manager. Olivier Giroud, who played a key role in the side’s European Cup triumph is set to join AC Milan, which leaves Chelsea hunting for strikers in the transfer market.
Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland has been their primary target, but the Bundesliga giants are reluctant in selling him this summer. Hence, the west Londoners have turned their attention to Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann, according to Express. The Frenchman is one of the players the Catalans are ready to sell in a bid to recover from a poor financial position.
Griezmann was signed by Barca from Atletico Madrid for 120 million euros in 2019, but two years on, the club will be forced to sell him despite him putting in a good shift in the 2020/21 season. The World Cup winner has been one of the world’s best strikers in recent years and could succeed in Thomas Tuchel’s multidimensional system at Stamford Bridge.
At the moment, there is a lack of clarity over Griezmann’s price tag but given that the Blaugrana need to raise 200 million euros in order to register new signings, they will look to recover a significant amount by selling him. But rest assured, Chelsea will not need to break the bank on signing him for two key reasons.
Firstly, they are only looking to capitalize on Barca’s wretched financial situation. Amid a lack of interest in the rest of their players, the La Liga outfit will be forced into accepting whatever transfer fee comes along. And more importantly, Griezmann turned 30 earlier this year and will not attract a lofty price tag at all.
The French striker promises to be a great short-term alternative to Haaland. Griezmann is a lethal forward in the box and has the experience of playing and starring in the Champions League among other major club competitions. His conversion rate is also brilliant with either foot or his head, making him a perfect finisher.
Under Tuchel, Chelsea have created a huge number of chances and their problem has only been finishing those off. By signing their key target, the Blues will see a significant growth in their goal-scoring numbers, especially because Griezmann fits the bill for what they need. However, Juventus and Manchester United are interested in signing the player as well.
It remains to be seen where the former Real Sociedad striker’s future lies, especially with him wanting to return to Atletico Madrid as per reports, but Barcelona unwilling to fulfil his wish due to their rivalry in La Liga. Chelsea, due to their financial prowess may be frontrunners ahead of Juve and United, but ultimately, the player’s decision will cast the die on his future.
