Chelsea are eyeing a possible signing from Inter Milan as the Serie A champions are forced into a mass summer exodus.
Chelsea were crowned champions of Europe for a second time in their history following their victory over Manchester City. The Blues are set to renew terms with Thomas Tuchel after having discussed their sporting project for next season, according to Fabrizio Romano. Tuchel is planning on a few signings after inheriting Frank Lampard’s squad mid-season and has come up with a list to further improve the team and challenge for the Premier League next year.
The Guardian reports that Romelu Lukaku has been identified as a top priority transfer for the summer. Inter Milan have been forced into an unpleasant situation due to the losses incurred during the pandemic and are open to selling star players such as Achraf Hakimi, Lautaro Martinez and Lukaku to balance their books.
The Belgian international could follow Antonio Conte, who recently parted ways with Inter, to the exit door. His departure would certainly have an impact on Lukaku’s decision to continue at San Siro due to the cordial relationship the 28-year-old shared with the Italian manager.
Chelsea have been linked with their former striker in the past few months as they lacked quality upfront with Timo Werner enduring a rough start to life in London. The Blues will need firepower upfront next season if they are to bring an end to Manchester City’s domestic dominance and the signing of Romelu Lukaku could spearhead them in the right direction. The 28-year-old scored 24 league goals this season for Inter and was their driving force in winning the Serie A after 11 years.
The likes of Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud have not received much continuity under Thomas Tuchel due to their lack of pace. The former Paris Saint-Germain manager prefers having fast forwards in his system that has seen Werner earn an indispensable role. However, the 25-year-old has struggled as a lone striker and could thrive next season with Lukaku as his partner in the attack.
He is fast on and off the ball despite his considerably bulky physique. His hold up play is also admirable due to his strength to waive off defenders and is a threat from set-pieces as well. Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku could possibly end up complementing each other next season and form a formidable partnership as it was this season with Lautaro Martinez while at Inter.
The former Manchester United striker has entered the prime years of his career and a return to Stamford Bridge next season could see him rewrite his previously failed chapter at Chelsea that ended abruptly in 2014. Inter Milan are also willing to part ways with their marksman for 100 million euros which makes him an attractive target over the likes of Erling Haaland and Harry Kane because they both are priced at 150 million euros each.
Should Chelsea reconsider signing Romelu Lukaku this summer transfer window?
