Chelsea set to land their transfer target from Paris Saint-Germain and end their hunt for a reliable first-choice goalkeeper.
The defensive structure at Chelsea has been called into question time and time again as the season has progressed.
Apart from the faltering backline, the goalkeepers at Chelsea have been at the firing line from fans, pundits, and media. The form of Kepa Arrizabalaga has been called into question and he has already been dropped from the first team a couple of times in the season as Frank Lampard has often opted for Willy Caballero in some of the big games this season.
The game against Liverpool last night was surely one of the most entertaining games for the neutrals. However, from Chelsea’s point of view, the fans can be proud of the attitude and desire displayed by the attacking players to push Liverpool throughout the game. Apart from all the attacking flair, the defensive game of the losers was concerning, particularly the form of Kepa Arrizabalaga who was at fault and could have done better for three of the five goals conceded by him leading to their 5-3 defeat at Anfield.
The Blues have already been linked with Andre Onana, Dean Henderson, Jan Oblak, and Nick Pope. As per the reports from The Sun, the French shot-stopper Alphonse Areola is the latest keeper who has been linked with a move to the English side.
Multiple reports in England have also pictured Areola purchasing a property and shifting his residence to his new home in London. The Premier League side are desperate to offload club-record signing Kepa Arrizabalaga this summer and Alphonse Areola is the man linked for the no.1 spot.
Areola spent the season on loan at the new LaLiga champions, Real Madrid, but as per reports from Spain it is understood they are not interested in signing him permanently after just 8 appearances in all competitions.
PSG are ready to move him on after the acquisitions of Keylor Navas and Marcin Bulka. The Frenchman’s agent Mino Raiola is already preparing a move to the English capital and it is believed an offer around £20million would be enough for the Premier League giants to seal a move for the PSG star.
The 27-year old’s desire is to live in London and the goalie would even be prepared to fight for the no.1 spot should Kepa stay at Chelsea beyond the end of the current campaign. However, with Euros 2021 in mind Areola would want to move to a club where he would get regular first-team action and prove himself for his Fench national team.
Is a new goalkeeper the answer to Chelsea’s defensive woes?
