Chelsea begin negotiations with Borussia Dortmund’s lethal marksman

Chelsea have made contact with Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland over a potential transfer this summer window.

Chelsea are gearing up for the upcoming season after winning the UEFA Champions League last season. The club’s hierarchy is impressed by Thomas Tuchel’s mid-season revolution and have extended terms with the German manager until 2024. Along with Tuchel, the likes of Thiago Silva and Olivier Giroud have also penned fresh terms at the Stamford Bridge.

The goal next season will be to win the Premier League title and also defend the Champions League title. However, to do so, Chelsea lack a cutting-edge in the front three and require a clinical striker to convert one-off chances in demanding fixtures. Timo Werner has been poor in front of goal and has struggled immensely in his first season in England.

While Werner’s pace has been a major boost, the German lacks the finishing touch to find the back of the net- scoring just 12 goals across 52 appearances in all competitions for the Blues. On top of that, the club’s top scorer in the Premier League was Jorginho– with seven goals from spot-kicks.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea have reportedly taken the first steps in beginning negotiations with Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland. The Blues could end up paying as much as 170 million pounds to complete the transfer while also offering Tammy Abraham as part of the deal.

Tuchel has made it crystal clear to Marina Granvoskaia and Roman Abramovich that he requires a prolific striker next season to win the Premier League title ahead of Manchester City, who have been dominating the English league for the past couple of years. The 47-year-old has the backing of the board and the Blues will look to strike a deal with Dortmund soon.

Erling Haaland is just the goal-scorer that the former Paris Saint-Germain boss requires in his set-up. The Norwegian ticks all the categories that Tuchel demands from a striker as he’s fast, clinical in front of goal and from long range, strong in the air and his hold up play is commendable due to his strong build.

The 20-year-old is on the back of an incredible season, scoring 41 goals in all competitions for the Black and Yellows while averaging a goal every 86 minutes to prove his potency in the final third.

Chelsea have also been linked with a few other strikers including former player, Romelu Lukaku. However, Erling Haaland tops the list mainly because of his age and goal-scoring profile. While Haaland fits the role for Thomas Tuchel, the question arises on whether Chelsea can afford to spend 170 million pounds. The Blues will look to reduce the total transfer fee by offering Tammy Abraham in exchange.

The English striker has fallen down the pecking order under the German manager and has been sidelined since the change in management. Abraham is certainly not part of Tuchel’s plans next season and the club could look to offload their academy product in a swap deal for Erling Haaland.

Another alternative option would be to wait until 2022 when the 20-year-old’s release clause worth 75 million euros will be activated. Chelsea can easily pay his release clause next season and can offer him a bumper contract to waive off the interest from clubs such as Manchester City, Manchester United and Real Madrid, who are all gunning for the Norwegian international.
