Chelsea are set to announce their latest signing from France
Chelsea have had a tough time in solving goalkeeper issues since the arrival of Kepa in 2018. The Spaniard became the most expensive signing for the club but has failed to live up to expectations of his price tag since his transfer to the Stamford Bridge. The player’s time now seems to have come to an end.
There have been several rumours about the Blues signing Jan Oblak from Atletico but recent developments suggest that the club have already agreed terms with Edouard Mendy from Rennes. According to Sky Sports, Mendy is having his medical at Chelsea after the club agreed a 22 million pound fee with the Ligue 1 side.
Frank Lampard is well on course to sign the seventh player in the transfer window. With the addition of the Senegalese shot-stopper, the Blues would have filled in the most important position of their squad.
Mendy has been a valuable asset to his club in the last season. His statistics in the Ligue 1 have been pretty decent as the goalie was able to keep nine clean sheets in his 24 appearances. On the other hand, Kepa kept eight clean sheets in 33 appearances in the Premier League beside making some costly mistakes.
The former Athletic Bilbao star has been out of form for a while now and was criticised for his regular howlers in the premiership last season. Back in 2019, the Blues no.1 came under fire for the his controversial behaviour in the Carabao Cup final where he refused to be substituted with Willy Caballero.
Even though the club has moved on since the incident there has been problems with the as his performances on-field have been a big reason behind the team’s slump in form.
In the first two games of 20/21 season, Chelsea have already conceded three goals which included two howlers committed by the Spaniard himself. Mendy’s arrival will be seen as a refreshing change to their list of goalkeepers.
With three keepers, Lampard will have to make some important decisions about the team’s no.1.The Senegal international might as well topple Kepa and Caballero to receive a start in the upcoming games this season.
