Chelsea and Manchester City continue to monitor David Alaba’s situation at Bayern Munich closely as rumours state that the player is open to leaving.

When talking about the current best teams in Europe, it is impossible to not include Bundesliga side Bayern Munich in the conversation. The Bavarians have been phenomenal and dominated every aspect of the game, in defense, midfield, and attack.

All this is credited to exceptional individual performances and consistency displayed by the Bavarian team. Also with the appointment of Hans-Dieter Flick as head coach, Bayern has been unstoppable with 25 wins from 28 games across all competitions, a feat so impressive that it broke the record for the most point per game average and most goals per game in the club’s history.

One key player in this record-breaking campaign has been Austrian international David Alaba. The defender has established himself as currently, one of the best in the world in his position, and there is no doubt about it. But with his contract expiring next season, the Austrian will be looking to sign a new contract, one with a paycheck which would reflect his status as one of the best in the world. However, the champions of Germany are yet to respond to the defender’s demands.

With the pace, experience, and balance of attacking and defensive capabilities the player brings to the table, teams from around Europe are monitoring the status of Alaba’s contract, looking for opportunities to land the Austrian star in their squad.

One such interest arises from England, with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City looking for defensive revamp after being exploited all season long. The 2019-2020 season has been disastrous for Pep’s side as injuries all around the season showcased that the team lacked defensive backups, which is a major reason for them missing out on the Premier League title. With the addition of David Alaba at the Etihad Stadium next season partnering up with Aymeric Laporte, City could have a rock-solid defense complimenting their lethal attacking force.

Another club interested in the 28-year-old is Chelsea. With newly appointed coach Frank Lampard making renovations to the team, adding Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech and looking to add Kai Havertz. He would also require defensive backups, as it is reported that Emerson Palmieri might be leaving for Italy in the summer, and Marcos Alonso is only counted upon to play left wingback. The addition of the Bavarian would provide experience, pace, and strength to support the young and fast attack of the Blues.

It is Alaba’s first preference to play for the German side and Bayern is keen to keep him too. It remains to be seen whether or not a new contract will be signed, but for now, a move away from the Allianz Arena seems quite unlikely for the Austrian star.
