Borussia Dortmund prepare a summer move for Juventus star man

Borussia Dortmund are expected to have a productive transfer window as Marco Rose prepares to take over the side from 2021/22.

Borussia Dortmund are having a subpar campaign despite reaching the DFB Pokal final. The Bundesliga giants risk missing out on a Champions League spot for next season and there could be severe ramifications of that, including the possible departures of Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho. As such, the squad needs rebuilding, especially at the back.

Marco Rose will take over as new coach in the summer and signing a goalkeeper is likely to be on his agenda. The current options in Marvin Hitz and Roman Burki have been weak-links in the squad as both struggle to play out from the back and are void of key attributes such as reflexes and ball handling, which have severely impacted BVB’s gameplay.

Goal has claimed that Borussia Dortmund will look at signing Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny during the summer transfer window. The club sees itself fit to undergo a revamp in the summer, especially focusing on the defensive department. Juve’s first-choice goalie is likely to be relegated to a fringe role if the Bianconeri sign Gianluigi Donnarumma this year.

Szczesny is thought to be unhappy with the idea of being confined to the bench and has left the door open to leaving, with Dortmund being considered an interested party. However, his acquisition will be far from easy for Die Borussen considering the Polish international’s contractual situations as well as the potentially high wage demands.

Wojciech Szczesny’s contract at the Allianz Stadium lasts until 2024, which means that Borussia Dortmund may be required to pay a sizeable transfer fee if they wish to sign their main target. In addition to that, his annual wage of 7 million euros may be unaffordable for the club unless they manage to sell some high earners, Sancho being one of them.

Juventus meanwhile would not be able to afford Donnarumma and Szczesny at the same time and may considering offers for the shot-stopper. The 31-year-old would be a great signing for BVB because he has great reflexes and can play the ball out from the back too. Rose’s style of play involves the keeper’s involvement, with Szczesny fitting the bill.

Nonetheless, Dortmund have also shortlisted a few other goalkeepers in the event that they fail to land their primary target. Lille’s Mike Maignan and RB Leipzig’s Peter Gulacsi complete a three-man wish-list. Which players do you think Borussia Dortmund must sign in the summer to rebuild their defence?
