Borussia Dortmund are going to see Erling Haaland depart sooner or later, which means they need to replace him with a potent enough player.
Borussia Dortmund don’t find themselves in the best of positions this season. Having already been knocked out of the Champions League, the Bundesliga giants are currently sitting in fifth place in their league, four points behind fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, which has put their qualification to the European Cup for next season under jeopardy.
Apart from potentially losing out on a significant revenue earned via the Champions League, the Black and Yellows could also be under greater pressure to sell Erling Haaland. The Norwegian marksman is a wanted property across Europe, as the likes of Barcelona, Manchester City and Real Madrid, have all vested interest in his signing.
Dortmund are unwilling to sell the player for anything less than 150 million euros, which is a daunting figure for each of his suitor, considering that they can trigger his release clause next year for just half the amount, 75 million. Nonetheless, it will be very difficult for BVB to retain the player who steps up in the Champions League, if they fail to qualify for it.
Sport Bild has now claimed that the side has shortlisted a replacement for the former Salzburg superstar in Frankfurt’s striker Andre Silva. Silva, also on the wish-list of Manchester United, has scored 24 times this season in the Bundesliga and has provided a further four assists. His numbers are only bettered by Robert Lewandowski.
He has a contract with Eintracht Frankfurt until the end of 2022/23, which means that his side can demand a reasonable fee only this summer if the striker does not renew terms. Moreover, the Eagles are thought to be struggling financially, especially with paying AC Milan over Silva’s signing, which may result in his sale during the summer.
Borussia Dortmund would certainly benefit from signing Andre Silva given that he is a similar player to Haaland. Unlike the Norway international, the 25-year-old is a good playmaker as well besides being a lethal marksman. Even with the Portugal national side, the forward has made a name for himself, which is a testimony to his quality given the quality in the Selecao.
However, it is very hard to imagine him coming to the Signal Iduna Park especially this year, despite being worth just 40 million euros. The Old Trafford is by far a more attractive and competitive destination for him, plus, with Anthony Martial’s poor form and Edinson Cavani’s age, the chances of Silva being a starter with the Red Devils are incredibly high too.
With that said, joining Borussia Dortmund from a team which is likely to qualify for the Champions League for next season could be considered a step down for him. It will be interesting to see which way the tide swings with regard to Silva’s future, especially because it is largely dependent on Haaland’s and the position which BVB finish the season in.
