With one of their best attack-minded players likely to leave the club, Borussia Dortmund have now located a worthy replacement.
Borussia Dortmund are set to finish in the top four of the Bundesliga after a turbulent season. The team picked up form towards the business end of the season and also won the DFB Pokal. However, the short-term success has not been enough to secure a permanent role for Edin Terzic, who will oversee his final match in the dugout on the coming weekend.
Marco Rose is set to replace the interim coach and will likely be given the license to spend a significant amount in the summer transfer window. With Jadon Sancho being linked with a move to the Premier League, BVB are expected to replace him without wasting too much time and have added Lille’s Jonathan Ikone to their wish-list, according to France Football.
Ikone is playing a crucial role in leading his side to the Ligue 1 title. Lille are just one win away from lifting the French premiership and the 23-year-old’s involvement of four goals and five assists in the competition could prove pivotal. Lille have developed youngsters well lately and have been open to selling them too, which favours Dortmund in this case.
The Black and Yellows would have to pay 25 million euros to sign Ikone, a fee which they will afford comfortably considering that there will be an inflow of nearly 100 million euros due to Sancho’s departure. They have already planned to invite Ikone to their training facilities in order to convince him to sign, as they did with Erling Haaland some time ago.
While a lot of Borussia Dortmund faithful may not be entirely satisfied with Ikone’s numbers and hence, deem him unfit to replace Sancho, it must be said that the Frenchman is playing for a very defensive side. Lille in fact boast the best defence in Europe’s top five leagues and have scored just 62 times in 37 matches this season in the Ligue 1.
Moreover, Dortmund is a club that always manages to get the best out of youngsters, with the likes of Giovanni Reyna, Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho just a few examples. Besides Ikone, Borussia Dortmund have also kept Donyell Malen, David Neres and Pedro Goncalves in their shopping list. In similar news, Ikone is not the only Lille player the club wants.
Rose is also keen on adding a goalkeeper to his roster to replace Marwin Hitz and Roman Burki, thus, being attracted by the prospect of signing Mike Maignan, also from Lille. Do you think that the German outfit will successfully complete a double raid on the French side?
