Benfica of Portugal has reportedly shortlisted a striker from Chelsea and from Atletico Madrid as their star signing of the summer.
Ever since Frank Lampard took the job as head coach at Chelsea last season, the Blues have put up excellent performances. After finishing fourth in the Premier League for the 2019-2020 season and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League next season, the Englishman has gone on a spending spree to bring in some of the finest talents from across Europe as reinforcements for the squad.
With the signings of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and soon to be announced, Kai Havertz, Lampard has no plans to stop. However, the main thing holding him back is the lack of funds. To bring in more quality players, the 42-year-old has to let go of a few of his own to gather enough money to be able to make more transfers. One such player which is likely to be let go is Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi.
The 26-year-old has been poor this season, failing to prove himself in big moments, like the match against Manchester United. Bagging just one goal from 16 appearances in the league, it is highly improbable that Lampard would be needing the likes of the Belgian international next season. Further, with the arrival of Timo Werner and Olivier Giroud being handed a contract renewal, the future for Michy Batshuayi at Chelsea is unlikely to exist.
But all is not lost for the 26-year-old, there are clubs in Europe who are interested in the Belgian forward. Portuguese side Benfica is one of the clubs interested in adding the player to their squad. The Eagles were initially looking to attain the services of Uruguayan star Edinson Cavani, but according to reports certain complications have arisen in the deal, and they are looking elsewhere for a striker, which brought them to Chelsea for Batshuayi.
The Belgian was linked to the Primeira Liga side before, back in 2013 when he was still playing for Standard Liege, but made a move to Marseille. If they want, Benefica can still secure a move for Batshuayi if they do decide to offer a viable offer to the Stamford Bridge.
Reportedly, the Eagles are also looking at the possibility to purchase Diego Costa from LaLiga side Atletico Madrid as an alternative. The Spaniard has fallen down the pecking order for Los Colcherones due to a dip in form and injuries, having just 28 starts in the Spanish league for the past 2 seasons. The 31-year-old is a very prolific goalscorer and is a real threat to face when he has his days, the presence of him in the squad could also prove to be a great asset for Benefica.
An offer or a deal is yet to be finalized, but one thing is for certain that Os Encarnados will be looking across Europe to bring in some offensive reinforcements, and the Chelsea man and the Atletico man would be the go-to options for the same.
