Chelsea have been handed a huge boost in their bid to land Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell, whose asking price was proving to be a hindrance.
It is no surprise that Chelsea have been circling around Ben Chilwell since quite some time now as they prepare to launch a bid for the English defender. Frank Lampard is unhappy with Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri, so turning to the market is his best option.
As per the Mirror, Leicester City’s boss, Brendan Rodgers has admitted to not knowing for certain about Chilwell’s future at the club and he even acclaimed that he might have played his game for the club with the defender ruled out in the last two league games against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. According to Express, when asked if that mean the defender will not play for the club again, Rodgers said:
I’m not sure. He’s a Leicester City player and not a player we want to lose.
The 23-year-old has attracted a lot of interest this season with the Blues being the front-runners to sign the Englishman. As of now, there is a close tussle between Manchester United and Leicester City for the fourth spot to decide the final entrant from the Premier League to the Champions League where Chilwell has played a crucial role.
Frank Lampard is eyeing the Foxes’ defender as the solution to his side’s wobbly defence which has caused them much problems this season. Chelsea want to get back in the ring and compete for the title once again. They had a good season this time around, but defensive lapses and inexperienced players have cost them a better one.
Should Leicester not qualify for Europe after a rigorous season, Ben Chilwell will be tempted to leave the King Power Stadium and if that is the case, he is set to be valued around 60 million pounds which is a lot of money, given the current situation. While it is a discount on the previously acclaimed 80 million, the Foxes wouldn’t want to keep a player whose mind may be elsewhere.
While Brendan Rodgers has urged his star player to stay, he also admitted to the fact that the club wants him to stay and they don’t want to lose him. The current Leicester squad has given the club hope to do well on a consistent basis and perform like they did in the recent past. However, that may well be without Chilwell after the manager’s latest comments.
