Barcelona are keen on balancing their books over the summer and are looking into the option of offloading one of their most expensive recruits.
Joan Laporta has a busy summer ahead as the president of Barcelona. The 58-year-old will make an attempt at restructuring the club’s financial situation that has been sluggish due to the wayward policies under the former incumbent, Josep Maria Bartomeu.
With that said, Barca will look to raise funds and free their salary budget over the summer by offloading a few players. Fabrizio Ramano reports that Antoine Griezmann could possibly be sold if an important bid arrives.
The 30-year-old has performed admirably this season after incurring a rough start to life at Camp Nou during his debut season. So far, Griezmann has chipped in with a total of 19 goals and 12 assists in all competitions for the Blaugrana this season while also playing an important role in their Copa Del Rey triumph.
Despite finally adjusting to life at Barcelona, the board is considering parting ways with the former Atletico Madrid forward due to financial reasons. In his deal that was signed under Bartomeu’s tenure, Griezmann is entitled to an increase in his wages every season until his contract expires in 2024.
Barcelona are already in a state of debt amounting to over 1 billion euros and are also tasked with the responsibility of renewing Lionel Messi‘s contract that expires at the end of June. The Blaugrana are looking into the option of selling Philippe Coutinho, Martin Braithwaite and now Griezmann in the summer to free up wages on the payroll that will be primarily used to extend Messi’s stay.
The 30-year-old has been previously linked with a move to Manchester United earlier last summer. The Red Devils are keen on signing a right-winger and have shortlisted Jadon Sancho as their top priority, however, United might reignite their interest in signing Griezmann as he is a much cheaper alternative than the Borussia Dortmund superstar.
Atletico Madrid have also shown interest in resigning Antoine Griezmann after the club’s president publicly admitted that he would want the Frenchman back at the Wanda Metropolitano.
However, selling Antoine Griezmann this summer will not be the wisest decision for Barcelona as the former Atletico Madrid forward could possibly become their main man next season with Lionel Messi being linked with an exit.
The 30-year-old has shown his worth this season under Ronald Koeman, moreover, Barcelona also paid a fortune to sign the Frenchman in 2019 for 120 million euros and the Catalans should wait at least until 2023, a year before Griezmann’s contract expires for him to live up to his price tag before being sold.
