Despite monitoring Belgium’s progress in the Euro 2020, Bayern Munich have been fazed by the price quoted for one of their players.
Bayern Munich have already made two significant signings ahead of next season in the shapes of Dayot Upamecano and Julian Nagelsmann. The defender and manager, both of whom are acquired from RB Leipzig, have cost the club 68 million euros. They are certainly welcome additions, nonetheless.
Upamecano is a brilliant centre-back and the Bavarians also needed a player as good as him after bidding farewell to both, David Alaba and Jerome Boateng, at the end of last season. Nagelsmann on the other hand is one of the most exciting managers in world football and the payment of his lucrative release clause to replace Flick could also be justified in the upcoming season.
Hansi Flick left Bayern Munich in order to take up a coaching role with the German national side and at the time of Nagelsmann’s appointment, he was arguably the best option available. As a result of their expenditure prior on the former Leipzig duo, the Bundesliga champions have pulled out of the race to sign Rennes wingback Jeremy Doku due to his price, as per Sky Sports Germany.
Rennes value the Belgium international at 26 million euros and have the player on a contract until June 2025, which means that they will not be ready to negotiate a lower price either. Nagelsmann was initially keen on adding a back-up player to his squad and saw Doku as the ideal signing, but Bayern Munich were thwarted in their approach at an early stage.
Jeremy Doku, who made a name for himself in the European Championship with his performance against Italy in the quarter-final, is extremely versatile and could have seen his career take a giant step forward if he had signed for the German side. From Bayern’s point, he is a player similar to Alaba and can play in three or four different positions across the pitch.
Although naturally a right-back, the 19-year-old can play as a wing-back on either flank and most recently featured in advanced roles on either wing for Belgium during the Euro 2020. At this point, Bayern Munich were the only team which had declared interest in his signing, but in hindsight, the club missing out on him is a blessing in disguise for both parties.
Following the previous edition of the Euros, the 6-time European champions signed Renato Sanches on the back of a brilliant tournament but his signing proved to be unsuccessful. Doku has made the headlines only in the most recent version of the competition in which he played only twice, thus suggesting that his arrival in Munich does not guarantee success.
Similarly, Doku would have been unable to play on a regular basis in the current Bayern Munich squad considering the quality of players that each and every position oozes. At only 19, staying at Rennes and developing in the Ligue 1 where he’ll get a consistent run of minutes will help him become a better player as opposed to being second fiddle elsewhere.
Which other players apart from Upamecano would you like Bayern Munich to sign this summer?
