Barcelona are still looking to bring reinforcements ahead of the next season with defensive targets being the priority.
Barcelona president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, is adamant about bringing a new player for the next season despite being financially hit by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
While the signings of Lautaro Martinez and Neymar have been put on hold due to the financial hardship faced by the Catalan giants, Bartomeu is keen on bringing one defensive target ahead of the next season.
Reports claim that the president is obsessed with former La Masia graduate, Eric Garcia, of Manchester City and desires his transfer as soon as possible. The Spaniard’s contract is expiring in 2021 making him a cheap target compared to other great defenders. What makes Garcia special is not only does he understand the Barca philosophy having graduated from La Masia, he can also be the perfect long term solution to 33-year-old Gerard Pique.
Having said that, getting him back home looks difficult especially with Pep Guardiola being keen on securing the youngster for many more years to come. For that reason, the president has opted to scout other possible candidates with Pau Torres been given some interest. The issue with the Villarreal defender is that his transfer fee of 50 million euros is a bit expensive for Barcelona.
Current back-up defender Samuel Umtiti has been tipped to depart at the end of this season meaning the Catalans will be short on center-backs and thus the signing of a new defender is a must ahead of the next season. While Garcia is still among the favorites, Luiz Felipe has now entered the race to secure the spot at Camp Nou.
Lazio have been in great form lately and one of their key members is Felipe, who helped the team reach a remarkable 4th place finish in Serie A. While striker Ciro Immobile has secured the top scorer award across Europe, the 23-year-old defender has been equally responsible for the club’s success.
The Brazilian international is great on set pieces as he has excellent aerial threat which Barca could use. The Blaugranas are prepared to pay 40 million euros for the center-back but will face competition from Lazio who are keen on keeping their star defender due to qualifying for next season’s Champions League after a long absence.
