Barcelona identifies the successor to Luis Suarez in Champions League hero, and are looking for a possible transfer.
Barcelona has faced their first trophyless season since the 2013/2014 season under Gerardo Martino. The 2019/2020 season has been one for the books, with a humiliating defeat against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League, failure to win or even score in any of the two El Classicos and losing out on the Copa Del Ray due to an excellent performance by Athletic Club. It is safe to say that the Catalans might be going through one of the worst periods in the history of the club.
All of the blame has come down to the management, with an incompetent president in Josep Maria Bartomeu and Quique Setien, a coach who doesn’t stand anywhere amongst the top managers in Europe. However, that is to possibly change this season, with the sacking of Setien and the appointment of Ronald Koeman as head coach for the 2020/2021 season.
One of the first thing that the 57-year-old plans to do is to get rid of the Uruguayan superstar Luis Suarez. El Pistolero was considered one of the best forwards in the world, but that title seems to be fading away. Being 33 years of age, Suarez’s qualities seem to be deteriorating with him gradually losing out on his pace, agility, and the overall threat he provides high up in the pitch. The Blaugrana would have to look for a replacement for their iconic number 9.
The initial ideal candidate was recognised in Inter Milan’s star striker Lautaro Martinez. The Argentine was greatly adored by the club, and the addition of the youngster would have been an incredible asset for them to have. However, the transfer fee demanded by the Serie-A side was upwards of 110 million euros, something which the Cules cannot afford under any circumstances. Therefore, the Spanish giants have had to look elsewhere for replacements.
According to Footmercato, Barca is looking for options in Ligue-1 with their interest being on Moussa Dembele who currently plays for Olympique Lyonnais. The 24-year-old has been really impressive in this year’s UCL campaign and has also been good all round the season with 24 goals and 7 assists from 46 appearances. The Frenchman is currently being pursued by many clubs around Europe, with big clubs like Atletico Madrid and Manchester United being involved in the mixer.
The 6’0 striker would be a great addition to the team, bringing pace and strength upfront. Also being relatively young, Moussa can further improve and develop to be a greater attacking threat. On the financial side of things, the Frenchman was bought for 22 million euros from Celtic Glasgow two years ago and it is unlikely that OL would be selling him for a price higher than 50 million euros. With the departure of Suarez, Barcelona might have enough funds to comfortably pull off a transfer for the prolific forward.
