Barcelona shortlist the in-demand Spanish defender to replace Gerard Pique at the Camp Nou
Gerard Pique has been a player at the top tier of European football for quite some years now, and rightfully so. The central defender can be regarded as one of the greats, featuring in the 2010 World Cup Spanish squad and the 2012 Euro’s squad. Along with international success, the player has also been the head of the Barcelona backline and has led them defensively to numerous successful campaigns.
Even at the age of 33, the Spaniard manages to be a rock in the defense and causes huge problems to attackers with his experience, height, and physicality. It is no doubt that Pique can be considered among the best defenders out there not only in Europe but around the world. But with age, the abilities of the 6’4 center back seem to be deteriorating.
Barcelona will then have the task of replacing their pillar in the defense which would not be an easy job for Josep Maria Bartomeu as defenders of that status and quality are hard to come by. However, it seems like the qualities that the Cules have been looking for as a replacement for the iconic number ‘3’ has been found in Pau Torres, according to Don Balon
The Villarreal defender has been exceptional this season partnering with Raul Albiol to from a concrete defense which has helped them to finish 5th in La Liga this season, enabling them to qualify for the Europa League. The 23-year-old has also earned his spot in the Spanish national team already scoring once in the Euro qualifiers, and will likely start alongside Sergio Ramos in the prestigious tournament.
At such a young age, it is too early to comment on whether the Villareal defender will be able to fill the boots of the former Manchester United defender at the Camp Nou, but he is already showing promising talent and similar traits.
Barcelona, already lacking in the defensive areas might benefit from the signing of the 6’3 defender, and with a release clause of just 30 million euros, it could prove to be a great investment.
