Barcelona are ready to leapfrog Bayern Munich and Manchester City to secure the services of Ajax wonderkid
Sergino Dest of Ajax Amsterdam has been a wanted man at several of the top European clubs including the likes of Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Mancheseter City. It has now been reported that Barca has shown serious interest in signing the 19-year-old talent.
The American fullback broke into the senior Ajax team last season and has featured as their main right back. Dest has made regular starts in both Eredivisie and the Champions League since then and has played a pivotal role. The 2019/20 season saw the 19-year-old make 35 appearances bagging four assists and two goals as well for the Dutch side. His performances in with Ajax has also seen him receive a call up with the United States national team.
The 19-year-old has been able to garner attention with his lightning pace and calm presence on the ball. Dest can attack and defend equally well, a feature that most modern day full-backs lack.
With the arrival of Ronald Koeman, Barcelona are expected to make changes in their starting lineup. The Catalan club has already offloaded Ivan Rakitic and next on the list is Luis Suarez and Arturo Vidal. Nelson Semedo was also close to an exit this summer, however, the player has made it into the list of untouchables of Barca and the Portuguese will most likely have to compete with Dest for starting eleven spot.
The other option could be that Barca could loan out Nelson Semedo and have Sergi Roberto and Sergino Dest compete for the first-team spot. Dest is young and has immense potential to be one of the best in his position, it all comes down to how well Barca make use of his talent and capabilities.
Irrespective of whether this transfer takes place or not, the american international has shown his mettle at such a young age and is definitely an exciting prospect in European football.
