Barcelona are now ready to sell Antoine Griezmann if the right offer arrives as they are now unable to register their new signings.
Barcelona have sold three players so far in the summer but need to sanction more sales in order to balance their books. Junior Firpo, Jean-Clair Todibo and Konrad de la Fuente earned the club just 25 million euros by leaving, whereas Matheus Fernandes’ contract termination saved them a few more millions. However, Barca need to free up bigger amounts of funds.
According to Diario Sport, they are now ready to show the door to Antoine Griezmann. The Frenchman was signed from Atletico Madrid for 120 million euros in 2019. Although he struggled to settle into the team during his first season, Griezmann had a campaign to remember in 2020/21, but that’s unlikely to help his cause of being a Blaugrana for longer.
Griezmann’s transfer listing comes as good news for Paris Saint-Germain, who have been linked with him in the past as well. The Ligue 1 giants see the ex-Real Sociedad striker as a perfect replacement for Kylian Mbappe and are ready to invest in him. Barcelona will happily sell him to PSG as it would allow them to free up a substantial part of their wage bill.
Currently, the Catalans are prohibited from registering their newest signings as a result of La Liga’s Financial Fair Play rules. Barca must part with players in order to free up at least 200,000 euros worth of weekly wages to be eligible to register Emerson Royal, Eric Garcia, Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero as a part of the first-team roster for next season.
By selling Griezmann, Barcelona will be able to attract a decent amount of transfer fee- though they may still suffer a loss on the 120 million euros they paid two years back. The 30-year-old is one of the club’s highest earners and just his departure could put the club back in a secure place financially. He is also not a part of Ronald Koeman’s plans for next season.
Koeman is set to employ an attacking trident comprising of Lionel Messi, whose contract renewal is only a matter of time, Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay. Antoine Griezmann will be relegated to the bench and may only be limited to substitute appearances, as will Ousmane Dembele- whose contract comes to a close in 2022.
In similar circumstances, Miralem Pjanic and Samuel Umtiti have both turned down Barcelona’s offer of a mutual contract termination and would like to continue at the club. It is a major blow to Joan Laporta’s plans as neither the Bosnian, nor the French are bringing enough to the team despite being paid better than some of the team’s mainstays.
