Gerard Pique rumoured to leave Barcelona

Barcelona reach an agreement to land Gerard Pique’s successor

Barcelona have agreed a deal for their first signing of the summer transfer window in a player who will be Gerard Pique’s replacement.

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique is at the end of his career and a visible slowdown in his form has been noticeable in the past one or two seasons. The central defender’s retirement from national team proceedings to focus on his club commitments have not done much good either and he offered to leave the club if there were changes in store.

After Barca’s 8-2 hammering at the hands of Bayern Munich, the ex-Manchester United centre-back stated that the team needs a major overhaul and he will be the first to leave if need be. Pique does have a contract at the Camp Nou until June 2022 but given his latest comments, one would imagine that he will not stay past the current agreement.

Diario GOL has claimed that the Blaugrana are already plotting for life after their colossal defender and will soon have a potential replacement for him. Manchester City central defender Eric Garcia has been seen as a successor to the 33-year-old and the Catalans have been linked with a switch for the youngster since a couple of months.

Pep Guardiola confirmed that Eric Garcia had refused a contract renewal at the Etihad Stadium, so with his stay expiring at the end of the current campaign, Manchester City would want to cash in on him soon. Barcelona are now close to agreeing a deal worth 18 million euros with the Citizens and add the first player since Ronald Koeman’s arrival.

Eric Garcia was part of the famous La Masia academy until 2017 when he switched pastures to England. With City, he has developed into a promising central defenders and made the jump into Spain’s national side as well, earlier this month. The 19-year-old promises to be a fantastic addition to the La Liga outfit’s roster.

Given that Pique is close to ending his career, Clement Lenglet remains the only option that Barca have that is reliable in the heart of defence. Samuel Umtiti has failed to deliver in the last two seasons and has always been linked with a departure whereas Jean-Clair Todibo has not lived up to expectations and may be sold off as well.

The Manchester City centre-back is young and has already made several appearances for Pep’s side against some major clubs as well. His awareness on the ball could be a crucial skill that makes him a worthy successor for Pique given Barcelona’s playing style. Do you think Eric Garcia is a suitable option to fill-in the imminent void in the club’s backline?
