Barcelona have strangely selected an unusual candidate to potentially replace Quique Setien at the Camp Nou after a disappointing season.
Barcelona had an array of options to pick Setien’s replacement, but they seem to have made a baffling choice. While the Spanish coach is undoubtedly prioritizing preparations for the Napoli clash of Champions League, his job hangs in the balance, and it could be the match that decides his fate.
With Barca tying in the first leg, they must secure a lead this time to ensure any hope for the Champions League glory. The former Real Betis coach joined this year in January and could have a short run with President Bartomeu lining up a bunch of potential replacements. While club Captain, Lionel Messi, demanded Xavi Hernandez as the manager, and the dressing room picked Patrick Kluivert as a favorite, other managers linked also include Laurent Blanc and Mauricio Pochettino.
The Xavi dream of Messi may have to wait until next season, while Ronald Koeman also won’t be a possibility until 2021. Hence, as a one-season solution, Frenchman Blanc was identified alongside Kluivert. However, a very strange decision has been made by controversy-prone Bartomeu, adding a Serie A “technician” to the list.
Antonio Conte, of Inter Milan, has been as a possible replacement to Setien if the Napoli clash ends unfavorably for the Catalans. While the Italian side have had a phenomenal season, securing the second place behind Juventus, it’s the behind-the-scenes controversy that the Italian manager has managed to spark which could lead to his exit from the Nerazzuris.
“I don’t think the work of the players has been recognised and I don’t think my work has been recognised.”
With rumors surfacing about Conte replacing Maurizio Sarri at Juventus, it remains to be seen whether Barca can manage to bring the fiery Conte to Spain, and whether it would be in the best interests of the Spanish giants.
