Ousmane Dembele must make a decision soon, on his future at Barcelona, with the club preparing to propose him with three options.
Ousmane Dembele has finally found consistency at Barcelona. The Frenchman’s fitness issues now seem like a thing of the past as he has managed to receive continuity in minutes under Ronald Koeman, which he has repaid by scoring 11 goals and assisting five times across all competitions this season, across 43 appearances.
His contract at the Camp Nou expires next summer and Barca remain keen on offering him an extension. The Blaugrana, however, have been in their worst ever financial trouble and consequently, cannot sustain the wage bill they are currently incurring. As a result, Dembele has been offered an ultimatum by the club, according to Marca.
Joan Laporta will be happy to keep Dembele at the club and reward him with an extension, but the player must accept a lower wage. Dembele is certainly not an exception to the motion passed by the Barcelona chief, but considering his contract situation, the board of directors believe that the ball is in their court and the player will have low bargaining power.
The choices at Dembele’s disposal will narrow down to three when official communications take place. The first, which is understood to be Barca’s priority, is to offer the player an extension at a reduced rate and the second is that Dembele will be sold. The third option though is one which will certainly leave all parties with a bitter aftertaste.
It involves Dembele being frozen out of all matchday activities as a pressure motive to either leave the club at the earliest or accept the contract which Barcelona offer him. The Catalans have spent 145 million euros including bonuses on signing the France international and are keen on finding the best solution to their investment, which hasn’t been realised well yet.
Dembele’s numbers prove that he has had a good season with Barcelona and one would think that it is imminent that the club and player will reach an agreement soon, either to part ways or extend their association. As such, neither would want to be at a crossroad for much long, keeping in mind that Barca’s best option may be to keep hold of Dembele.
One must consider the fact that the team as a whole had a terrible start to the season. Dembele has turned the screws since the start of 2021 and delivered on a similar wavelength like most of his teammates.
Moreover, he is one of the very few younger players that the club has and the ageing squad’s lacklustre performances prove how important the retention of the lower aged lot is.
What do you think the future holds for the 24-year-old?
