Barcelona are looking to make the most of the available free agents in the market and have added a fifth player to their wish-list.
Barcelona have already kicked off their transfer revolution ahead of next season and are expected to sign as many as four players, all free agents. Eric Garcia, Georginio Wijnaldum, Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero have all been linked with switches to the Camp Nou, with only official announcements now pending for each of them.
Joan Laporta has certainly done the best he could with a very limited amount of money at his disposal, but the defensive department of the team continues to require strengthening. The goalkeeping position is especially left wanting more as Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s form and fitness in recent months have been questionable.
Ter Stegen has conceded a few cheap goals and has not been as decisive in the first third as he was a few months ago. The 29-year-old had a knee surgery some days ago, his second such procedure in as many years. Neto, during Ter Stegen’s absence at the start of 2020/21 was not at the top of his game either, meaning that the keeper’s role needs tinkering.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Catalans have shortlisted Gianluigi Donnarumma as a fifth free arrival for the summer. The Italian goalkeeper is set to leave AC Milan at the end of June when his contract ends and is wanted by Barcelona, who face competition from Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain in the transfer market.
Donnarumma was a key part of the Milan side which had a successful season in the Serie A. The Rossoneri earned a Champions League berth and looked formidable, but the side’s rejuvenation was not enough to convince the shot-stopper into signing a new deal. That said, he would be a fantastic signing for the Blaugrana especially for free.
He possesses incredible reflexes and his tall stature is a blessing that allows him to cover the top and bottom ends of the goal with relative ease. The 22-year-old is also great with the ball at his feet, something that Barca look for in their goalkeepers as they adapt a style which involves playing out from the back. Needless to say, Donnarumma is still young too.
Barca however, should be aware that Donnarumma’s arrival is going to be a very difficult proposition and more so, due to Mino Raiola being his agent. The Italy international’s choice will perhaps be driven by money considering that he is a free agent. The La Liga giants unfortunately trail PSG significantly in that regard and are clearly behind Juve too.
Raiola, meanwhile, is expected to look for a major signing bonus and agency commission for himself. These factors coupled with Barcelona’s well-documented financially issues make Donnarumma’s signing a very difficult prospect. With Neto linked with a move to Arsenal, Barca require a goalkeeper, at least to back Ter Stegen up in the next season.
Which player should the club sign to guard the posts ahead of the 2021/22 campaign?
