Barcelona finds an exiting replacement for aging left-back Jordi Alba.
Barcelona have struggled this season with constant injuries which have resulted in them realizing the lack of depth in certain positions.
One such crucial element is their left-back role where Junior Firpo was meant to play as the back-up to Jordi Alba. Once Alba got injured, however, the club quickly realized that Firpo was not the right fit for coach Quique Setien’s plans, which resulted in right-back Nelson Semedo playing on an off-role position.
Thought Semedo held his ground for the most part, the lack of a proper secondary left-back has been one of the board’s main focus for the next transfer window. Alba at 31 years of age, has showcased that he is in serious need of a substitute after being seen visibly demotivated in crucial matches such as the 4-0 Champions League defeat against Liverpool last season.
Alba was seen crying at half time when the team was only losing 1-0 at Anfield after winning 3-0 at home in the first leg of the draw. Jorgen Klopp’s men would need 3 more goals in order to win and the Spaniard was behaving as if they had already achieved it.
Barca president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, has ensured that the club signs a new left-back in the next transfer window after preparing to sell Firpo before the next season. FC Porto’s left-back, Alex Telles, has reportedly offered himself to the Catalans to fill the gap left behind by Firpo’s exit. At 27 years of age, Telles wants to experience a more difficult league before his retirement and desires a move to the Nou Camp to fulfill his aspirations.
He is an attacking-minded full-back as he has managed 13 goals and provided further 12 assists across all competitions. Barca, and their manager Setien, are also known to utilize their full-backs as wingers to add more legs in the attacking half to maintain possession.
At 30 million euros, Telles could be a great addition for the next era of Barcelona and the player himself hopes that his performance with the Spanish giants can earn him a spot in the Brazilian national team ahead of the Copa America next year.
