Barcelona have taken their transfer business right until the end of the transfer window despite making significant sales this summer.
Barcelona have not added many defensive reinforcements in the summer transfer window. The Catalan club could only sign 19-year-old Segino Dest from Ajax Amsterdam despite their defensive shortcomings last season. The club is looking to bolster its defence to win some silverware in the ongoing season after failing to impress their supporters last time out.
According to the latest reports, the Blaugrana have begun talks for Eric Garcia and are willing to bring the back the Spaniard to Camp Nou. The City centre-back was one of the bright prospects of the La Masia back in 2017 before he left the club in search of first-team football and had decided to ply his trade at the Etihad Stadium.
Garcia has had limited opportunities under Pep Guardiola as last season the Spanish teenager was able to make only 13 appearances in the Premier League. The Citizens’ manager has often preferred using Aymeric Laporte and Fernandinho as his first-choice centre-backs and the latest recruitments of Nathan Ake and Rube Dias further shed water on Eric Garcia’s attempts of becoming a regular starter.
During the latter stages of last season, Pep Guardiola made it clear that the central defender had requested to leave the club and stated that he will not renew his contract beyond June 2021. The former Bayern Munich head coach also made it clear that he will not force an uninterested player into staying, but the Spain international will only be allowed to go in the event of a reasonable offer.
Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman has made no secret of the club’s interest in the La Masia product and it looks like only transfer fees are the problem. Manchester City are remaining firm on their price tag of 18 million euros, but the Catalans are reluctant in matching that evaluation given that their target will be available for free next year. However, a mutual breakthrough is expected soon with the contract situation in mind.
Eric Garcia would be a solid addition to Koeman’s squad which is in dire need of a centre-back. Samuel Umtiti continues to face fitness snags on a consistent basis, whereas Ronald Araujo has not yet gotten as much experience as is needed to play for a club of the Blaugrana’s calibre. Clement Lenglet and Gerard Pique remain the club’s only trustworthy options and the latter is catching up with age.
