Barcelona faces a serious issue regarding the whereabouts of Samuel Umtiti as fail to find potential buyers
Since his arrival at Barcelona, Ronald Koeman has made his demands and future plans for the club including the players that will feature in it. The players who do not feature in those plans will be getting sold or let go, like what had happened with Luis Suarez and Nelson Semedo. The Dutch coach has had no problems getting rid of players he does not require as there are suitors everywhere in Europe, plus the quality of players that come out of the Catalan club make it all the more worth pursuing.
However, the Blaugrana has been struggling with the sale of one player as no club seems to want him, the one in question is Samuel Umtiti. The Frenchman had established himself as a regular starter for Barca and put up phenomenal performances which were convincing enough for the fans to label him as the future for the club.
Until early 2018, everything was going well until the time of a contract renegotiation came near. With the risk of the prodigy signing for another club, Barcelona gave Umtiti a hefty contract that features him getting 9 million euros a year until the year 2023.
Then came the World Cup, in which the Barca man put up good performances as well. But, Umtiti had entered the tournament with a problem in his knee, and instead of sitting it out and recovering, he made it worse by playing. Since then, he has been ridden with injuries barely playing any games for the La Liga giants and being very inconsistent in the games that he does play. Barca has been trying to sell their defender for a long time, but reportedly have not received any promising offers yet from any other club.
Even though the former Lyon man is a player of exceptional quality, the reasons which drive teams away from a possible purchase are very valid and well known. The 26-year-old is severely injury prone plus the Catalan side would not be looking to sell him for a very cheap price either, which would not make sense for any club to put up with. Along with that, the player’s high wages of 9 million euros a year is not something every club can afford.
In the end, Barcelona might have a serious issue on their hands with Umtiti eating a considerable amount of the wage bill and no club being interested to sign the French international.
