Barcelona begin their pursuit in search of a replacement for Luis Suarez and have reportedly considered an upcoming star from Benfica

Times have changed at Barcelona and a lot has happened over the past 2 months. The most recent big change being that of Josep Maria Bartomeu’s resignation along with his board of directors. Luis Suarez left the club this past summer for Atletico Madrid while Messi came very close to an ultimate departure from the club. Fortunately, Messi did not leave the club but the search for Suarez’s replacement is on as the Blaugrana have stumbled upon the option of Darwin Nunez as per ESPN.

Darwin Nunez has been on the radar of Barcelona for the past year or so and has been termed as one of the brighter prospects in European football. He is currently with SL Benfica and on loan at Almeria. However, his ability to adapt to Spanish football in his first season is what caught Barcelona’s eye. The forward scored 16 goals from 32 appearances. By all means, one can say the Benfica made a steal when they bought him for just 24 million Pounds.

A striker and a center-back are what the club needs at the moment. Antoine Griezmann hasn’t really fit into the role of the striker as the Frenchman prefers playing in the midfield. Nunez was being considered as an option in the final weeks before Suarez departed but Benfica stepped in. An alternative to Nunez was Memphis Depay who was heavily touted with a move to Camp Nou but the deal collapsed on the final day of the transfer window.

Now, both, Eric Garcia and Memphis Depay are likely to see their contracts run out next summer. This is precisely why Barcelona will look to sign them in January but the kind of deal that one can expect still remains unknown. The squad needs a bit of revamping and there is no doubt about it. There are some fresh legs that are required and the squad in general needs some pace. Garcia might not be the fastest of players going around but he can be groomed into a very fine centre-back.

Nunez must be preferred over Depay because of his age. Darwin Nunez is just 21-years-old and has got a fine future ahead of him. No doubt, he will only get better in Barcelona should he arrive.  It is likely that Nunez if approved, could be the next number 9 at the club. There are some interesting times in store for Barcelona fans.
