Barcelona eye three central defenders as part of a grand overhaul

Barcelona are all set to have a busy transfer window as the Spanish giants have several defenders on their radar.

The upcoming transfer window will prove to be pivotal for Barcelona, as they hope to revamp their squad and bolster their options in attack and defence. However, the club is dealing with a huge financial crisis and as a result, they are not expected to overspend in the market.

Apart from the likes of Erling Haaland, Memphis Depay and other forwards that have been linked to the Catalans, the club is eyeing up to three defenders in the summer. As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Eric Garcia is on top of Barcelona’s wish list for the summer.

The Spaniard’s contract at Manchester City runs out this summer, and he will be available as a free agent. The 20-year old is a talented player and has all the traits of being a world-class defender. However, he has failed to break into the starting eleven at City and is expected to return to his boyhood club in the summer.

Barcelona are willing to offload Samuel Umtiti, whose career at the Spanish club has reached a point of saturation following several injuries. The Frenchman’s contract at Camp Nou runs out in the summer of 2023, and both parties will look forward to ending their association at the earliest.

Alessio Romagnoli, captain of AC Milan is another player on the Catalans’ wish list. The 26-year old centre-back has a contract at Milan that expires in the summer of 2022, and it is expected that he may be open to a move to Spain. Lisandro Martinez is another defender, Ronald Koeman has shown keen interest in. The Ajax defender primarily operates as a centre-back, but is quite flexible and can play on the left-side of defence as well.

Marcos Senesi is another player from the Dutch League who has been on Barcelona’s radar. The Argentine defender who plays for Feyenoord has been a regular starter this season, and has three goals and assists each to his name. His contract at the club expires in two years time, and the Dutch club will be looking forward to making the most of this deal if Barcelona do come knocking on the door.

The Blaugrana have plenty of options to choose from, with Eric Garcia almost certain to join the club in the summer. Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet, Ronald Araujo and Óscar Mingueza are the centre-back options remaining at the club, if Samuel Umtiti decides to part ways. Alessio Romagnoli can be a great fit at Camp Nou, given the amount of experience he brings with him. However, that would be a costly acquisition for the Spanish side given the limited resources at the club.
