There has been a major rift in the Barcelona dressing room amongst the players due to the president, Josep Maria Bartomeu
The dressing room at Barcelona is in tatters as the issues at the club continue to grow with every passing day. The main to be held responsible for the mess at the Catalan club is Josep Maria Bartomeu, who is the root cause behind all the issues. The president has once again made it into the limelight of the media with his actions and this time has caused a major drift in the dressing room.
Barca was handed a rather shocking defeat by Real Madrid at the Camp Nou as the game ended 1-3 in favour of Los Blancos. The defeat against their arch-rivals was indeed a bitter pill to swallow for Ronald Koeman and the squad, however, the worse is yet come.
Reports now state that the player’s unity has fallen apart due to Josep Maria Bartomeu. The president had asked the players to agree to a 30% pay cut, however, the players were reluctant with his decision after already receiving a slash in their salaries earlier in the year.
Thus, Bartomeu decided to secretly contact Gerard Pique, Frenkie de Jong, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, and Clement Lenglet in private. The players were offered a contract renewal in private with a special clause that would see their current salary reduce, however, in the latter years of their contract, there would be a significant increase in their wage.
While Bartomeu conducted his private meeting with these players, the rest of the squad decided to pen a letter against the motion by the president. However, the letter lacked the signatures of four players, namely Gerard Pique, Frenkie de Jong, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Clement Lenglet who had already secured a deal with the president in private.
The confidential association between Bartomeu and the players has not gone down well between the rest of the squad and the board. The players have completely lost faith in each other and the season has just begun. Something or the other has to be done as the Catalans have difficult games lying ahead that will judge their season.
