Barcelona looks at domestic options as they consider the signing of Real Sociedad forward as a replacement for Luis Suarez

In 2014, one of the best-attacking trios the world has ever seen was formed in Barcelona, with Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Luis Suarez. The trio, fondly called MSN went on to win a treble in their first season together, which is a very impressive feat in itself. But with time, the trio dissipated with Neymar leaving for Paris Saint-Germain, and now after 6 years Luis Suarez’s contract is terminated and he is set to leave for Atletico Madrid as well.

This move comes after newly appointed coach Ronald Koeman decided that he would no longer be requiring the services of the Uruguayan due to his age and recent form and would not feature in his plans for the club. Barcelona would not be making any money from the transfer, but it will surely help reduce the massive wage bill the club has built up. Now, the Dutch coach would have the responsibility to replace the prolific number ‘9’ and have been looking for options around Europe that would fit the team.

The ideal candidates for this role have been well established, with Lautaro Martinez or Memphis Depay being the popular primary choices. However, these players have a very high price tag and the Blaugrana do not have the funds to carry out such pricey transfers. So instead, the club has looked for cheaper alternatives and have reportedly found one in Real Sociedad’s striker Willian Jose.

The Brazilian forward scored 11 goals in the La Liga last season and has been an integral part of La Real’s league campaign for the 2019-2020 season which saw them finish 6th in the league. Barca has been keeping close tabs on the player, monitoring his performance, and will be looking to add the 28-year-old to the squad. Having a release clause of 70 million euros, Sociedad will be willing to sell at a price much cheaper which will make the move more convenient and viable for the Catalans.

Luis Suarez had proved himself as one of the best strikers of his generation and finding a replacement for him would not be an easy task, but Ronald Koeman is the man entrusted to take the team forward and it will be interesting to see what moves the 57-year-old has up his sleeve.
