Manchester City and Barcelona have started negotiations over the possible transfer of a discarded left-back from the Etihad Stadium
Barcelona has not been able to add a lot of defensive reinforcements. Last season, the club missed out on all major trophies and hence had to end their campaign without any silverware. Their season ended with a thumping defeat against Bayern Munich where the German Champions had scored 8 goals against a shaky Barca defense. It has now been rumoured that the Catalans have considered to sign a Premier League superstar from Manchester City to add numbers to their backline.
According to a Catalan source, Manchester City has offered Oleksandr Zinchenko to Barcelona. The proposal given by the Citizens may be an indication that the club is not willing to accommodate the Ukrainian defender in their present setup.
The 23-year-old left-back has not been a starter in Pep Guardiola’s side and has been the second choice for the Manchester City boss. Last season the Ukrainian international was able to make only 19 appearances in the Premier League and had to play second fiddle to Benjamin Mendy.
Zinchenko has however stated that he is willing to fight for a starting spot and has made it clear that he does not have any intentions to leave the Etihad. Currently, the left-back is ruled out with an unknown injury.
The Catalan club might consider making a move for the Ukrainian left-back as Koeman would want a decent alternative for Jordi Alba. Junior Firpo featured as deputy left-back for the Spaniard the last term and was average in the full-back position.
Barcelona will have to manage their aging squad efficiently as the upcoming season will see the Catalans competing for La Liga, Champions League, and the Copa Del Rey. The Dutch manager has set sights on securing silverware which include their search for a sixth Champions League title.
Meanwhile, Manchester City is going through a major injury crisis as Pep stated that his current squad consists of only 13 senior players. The departure of Zinchenko might pose a risk to the balance of the squad as the club has only senior two left-backs at their disposal.
However, there can be a possible swap deal that can be worked out by both clubs where Junior Firpo might make a switch with the Ukrainian international. At present, Barcelona has not made an official bid for the City full-back.
