Atletico Madrid are ready to part ways with a long-time servant after Bayern Munich have shown serious interest in landing the midfielder.
Saul Nigez is expected to end his 12-year association with Atletico Madrid this summer after failing to cement a place in Diego Simeone’s new set-up. The 26-year-old has fallen down the pecking order under the Argentinian manager’s eyes and played just 12 full fixtures in Atleti’s La Liga winning campaign.
The midfielder is on a contract until 2026 and is currently valued at 55 million euros on the transfer market. According to Marca, Saul and Atletico Madrid are open to the idea of parting ways, with Bayern Munich showing serious interest in landing the Spaniard. The 2020-21 La Liga winners have negotiated a deal with the Bavarians and have agreed on a 68-million-pound transfer this summer.
He is considered to be the ideal replacement for Thiago Alcantara, who completed a switch to Liverpool last year. Like Thiago, Saul shares similar characteristics on the ball, especially with his close control dribbling skills and flair. Bayern Munich need a spark of creativity in their midfield and the 26-year-old Spaniard could be the one to fill in the role.
He has also been linked with a move to Manchester United in the past, however, the rumours have simmered down as the Red Devils already have a well-balanced midfield. With the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Donny van de Beek and Paul Pobga in midfield, there is certainly no room to fit Saul into the squad.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid plan on quickly reinvesting the transfer sum received into purchasing Udinese’s Rodrigo de Paul who has been valued at a minimum of 35 million pounds. Diego Simeone is looking for a workhorse of a midfielder to partner Marcos Llorente in the engine room and De Paul fits the bill for Los Rojiblancos.
The Argentine midfielder has been linked with moves to AC Milan, Inter Milan and Leeds United as well. With that being said, Atleti will look to close the sale of Saul with Bayern immediately to expedite their negotiations with Udinese over the transfer of De Paul.
Fabrizio Romano has also reported that the 26-year-old could leave the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium this summer after interest coming from the Bavarians and Chelsea. Where do you think Saul will be playing next season and which club fits his profile the best?
