Atletico Madrid are all set to sign a Valencia midfielder in the upcoming winter transfer as they look to bolster their bench strength
Atletico Madrid was not able to bring in big-money signings in the recent transfer window as the club suffered heavy losses due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Spanish club was although lucky enough to land Luis Suarez on a free transfer as the former Liverpool striker had decided to leave Barcelona as he was not in the plans of Ronald Koeman.
Los Rojiblancos also exercised the option of bringing players on loan as Diego Simeone‘s side brought Lucas Torreira from Arsenal. The club, however, had to part ways with one of their star members as the Gunners activated the release clause of Thomas Partey and acquired the services of the Ghanaian international for a fee of 45 million pounds.
At present, the club has had an average start to their season as the Spanish outfit has acquired 11 points out of their first five games in their league campaign and are sitting 5th in the points table. On the other side, Atleti has had a tough start in the Champions League as they were thumped by defending champions Bayern Munich in a four-goal rout and had only managed a narrow win against Salzburg at home.
According to recent developments, Diego Simeone’s side has now set sights on Valencia midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia and is willing to sign the player in the upcoming winter transfer window. The 27-year-old defensive midfielder has been an important member of the first team as he has been solid defensively at the Mestalla Stadium.
Atletico Madrid already has the likes of Lucas Torreira and Hector Herrera for their defensive midfield role and have rotated both of them in the ongoing season. However, the addition of the former Inter Milan midfielder will reportedly add more steel to the squad and also act as a cover for Torreira.
Los Rojiblancos are willing to secure the services of the Frenchman by the end of the winter transfer window in January and will hope that they can bring the Valencia star to the Wanda Metropolitano. Currently, the Spanish side is slated to face Lokomotiv Moscow on Tuesday for their third group stage game in the Champions League.
