Atletico Madrid are expected to be at a loss, financially and figuratively, as their record-signing is looking to leave the club this summer.
Atletico Madrid are on the verge of their first La Liga title since 2014 after a late comeback win over Osasuna on Sunday. Despite a shaky run of form which saw Diego Simeone’s side nearly give up a 13 point lead, the team is now 90 minutes away from the trophy. However, all is not rosy in the Spanish capital as the club’s most expensive signing is unhappy.
Todo Fichajes has claimed that Joao Felix wants to leave Atletico Madrid in the summer and has asked his agent to listen to offers. The Portugal international has been relegated to a fringe role in the last few weeks and his lack of versatility has worsened matters for him. Felix wants to call it a day at Atleti as he does not want to spend his foreseeable future on the bench.
While he was signed only two years ago for a fee of 126 million euros, it is thought that the Rojiblancos will be ready to part ways with him for just 80 million euros. The 21-year-old has attracted interest from the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, all of whom can comfortably pay his price tag during the summer transfer window.
Joao Felix was signed as a replacement for Antoine Griezmann at the Wanda Metropolitano, but a slow start to life in La Liga coupled by Simeone’s two-man strike partnership has worsened matters for him. The Portuguese also fails to track back and contribute defensively, hence missing out on a vital requirement of his manager’s intense system.
Los Rojiblancos breaking the bank for Felix did not make sense from the first day as he has never been a workhorse on the pitch. The forward’s attacking qualities make him ideal for a club which does not play a defensive brand of football and that’s something which the player as well as the club failed to realise before signing an association two years ago.
A fee of 80 million euros also seems on the steeper side for Joao Felix, meaning Atletico Madrid are certainly going to incur a major loss on their record signing. Chelsea, Manchester City and PSG are likely to compete for the could-be La Liga champion in the summer. Felix’s performance for Portugal in the European Championship may be an exclamation point on his future.
Where do you see him plying his trade from the 2021/22 season?
