Atletico Madrid and Arsenal, who dealt in Thomas Partey’s transfer last summer, are once again tipped to discuss a signing this summer.
Atletico Madrid are set to begin their La Liga defence in August as Diego Simeone hopes to win successive titles for the first time in over a decade as the club’s manager. In his bid to do so, the Argentinian manager has signed compatriot Rodrigo De Paul from Udinese and remains keen on further strengthening his squad by bringing in a striker.
Despite dominating and leading the La Liga standings for the better part of the 2020/21 season, there were visible patches in the Atletico Madrid squad which lacked a consistent source of goals, barring Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan’s absence through the coronavirus and a dip in form saw Los Rojiblancos lose considerable ground in points.
Simeone’s club has now revived its interest in signing Alexandre Lacazette from Arsenal, Daily Mail has reported. Atleti have had a longstanding interest in signing the Frenchman and had even agreed a deal in principle to sign him from Lyon in 2017. However, a transfer ban meant that Lacazette ended up moving to London but continues to be linked with Atletico.
Now that Lacazette is in the final year of his contract with Arsenal, Atletico Madrid are starting to believe that they could be able to sign him for a discounted price this summer. The French international is valued at 15 million pounds by the Gunners and it may be a transfer fee that is comfortably within the reach of Atletico Madrid. Plus, the Gunners could agree to a lower fee considering Lacazette’s contract situation.
Lacazette, although 30, will be a success in La Liga. His first few months at Arsenal were a benchmark of his quality and even at present, he plays brilliantly when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is not in the setup. The ex-Lyon striker does not seem compatible with his Gabonese counterpart in a three-man attacking line but has featured to good use in a system employing two strikers instead of one.
While he has not been the star man for Arsenal in the last couple of years, Lacazette still scored 17 times and assisted thrice in all competitions for Mikel Arteta’s men last season. Diego Simeone has a good track record with getting the best out of players and thus, the 51-year-old will be hopeful of helping Lacazette replicate his numbers from his Lyon days.
His signing by Atletico Madrid could mean an end to their pursuit of Antoine Griezmann, who is keen on returning to the Wanda Metropolitano. The likes of Moussa Dembele and Joao Felix will also face some stern competition to get regular minutes, but a good squad depth could help the defending La Liga champions in fighting for all titles in 2021/22.
Do you think Atleti should go for Lacazette this summer?
